Lending Library

During the year 1996, 755 new readers registered for library cards.
The total books checked out during the year 1996 amounted to 7,535

The daily visits to the Reading Room are about-60 to 70 readers, who were given assistance on a variety of subject matters, such as science, literature, economy, history, and finally, matters related to Macedonia and Thrace.

The Library was endowed with 755 new books in 1996.
The books registered on the Library’s files amount to 41,295, up until the end of 1996.

The house of Letters and Fine Arts of the Municipality of Xanthi established its Engraved Art Gallery about 28 years ago.
Currently, the Library contains 120 works of art, which are packaged in one room since there is no proper place for their display.
We believe that during 1997 the Art Gallery will be ready.

Over 400 students attend the municipal music observatory each year. It is certified by the Ministry of Culture and provides diplomas to its graduates. During 1996, six diplomas were awarded.
The music observatory features 13 schools that teach the full range of musical instruments and music. Moreover, there are two choirs, the children’s choir and the men’s and women’s, as well as the Byzantine Choir.
Moreover, another department is of great interest, that is the young children’s music lessons, providing a music acquaintance the young aficionados of notes. For the past five years it has been in operation, over 60 young children attend these classes. Last year, they presented Prokovief’s «Peter and the Wolf».
By keeping its tuition low, especially when compared to privately-held music observatories, the Municipal Music observatory gives all of the region’s children the opportunity to study music.

It is a certified, amateur School of Classical Dance. It has been operating since October of 1992, with great success. During 1996, over 200 students learn the Terpsichorean art. It attracts quite a few dance students by giving the best possible training and keeping the tuition low.

The Philharmonic has conducted a series of concerts, participating in a great array of events, such as religious, cultural, social and national, both in the city and in the municipality in general.
Its participation in the event honouring the lighting of the Olympic Flame, held in the central square of Xanthi, was quite impressive.
