THE MESSAGE OF THE MAYOR OF XANTHI
![]() As we approach the end of a book, a movie, an idea, or an act in general, its interpretation is endowed with singular significance. The Thracian Folkloric Celebrations -Carnival of Xanthi, began as an ambitious idea 33 years ago. The then-organisers put together the first events with the thought of promoting this isolated region in the way they knew best - through its tradition. As such, in the late Fall of the century, and given the contribution of the institution of Folkloric celebrations, for a number of years, both qualitatively as well as quantitatively, to the social, cultural and economic development of the region, the philosophy of these celebrations is in turn endowed with special significance. A sweet memory, full of colour, sound, scent. A memory that comes to life in order to remind, entertain and give purpose to a new beginning. The Thracian Folkloric Celebrations, the Carnival of Xanthi, honour this idea. They liven memories and tradition, breath new life into the overall spirit with renewed forces, for creative growth. Living proof are the 33 years of an institution whose every end is a new beginning. A beginning that calls for increased participation and contribution, in every way, to our region’s cultural development.
By the end of the events, the era’s ideas will have left their indelible marks, shaping the institution’s history, which in turn has been established as a point of reference, continuation, change, or extension, for a more ambitious course, a course in which Xanthi has proven that it can be both dynamic and pioneering.
Today, as the demands have grown, the municipality of Xanthi strengthens the institution of these events and continues with the philosophy held then, but this time through modern means, technical and artistic care, thereby safeguarding and promoting the region’s rich traditions and customs. The uniqueness of this institution is evident in the manner of its organisation. Folklore events held with the modern yet delightful spirit of Mardi Gras. The success is great, both in quality and numbers. Forty local associations, local authorities and unions, as well as visiting folklore associations (from throughout Greece and abroad) gather around the organising body of the Municipal Agency for the Development of Xanthi) and present their work, which is enjoyed by the residents of the wider region and the tourists, as well as by artists and professionals, giving them the impetus and the materials for research and work, always contributing to the region’s social, cultural and economic development.
Credibility, the level of quality and the great degree of participation are the characteristics of this institution which is supported by authorities, businesses, artists, associations and, above all, the local people.
