MUNICIPAL OPERATION OF DEVELOPMENT
OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF XANTHI
In 1996, the M.O.D.X. , in order to fulfil the aims for which it had been founded, held the following events:
1. Thracian Folklore Festivities
Thirty-one years of Thracian Folklore Festivities - the Carnival of Xanthi. During the ten-day events, held from the 15-25 of February, dance and musical groups, folkloric associations and groups grants the traditional colours of this festive town.
Moreover, cultural associations, university associations, students, carnival groups, and other artistic groups granted to the city the spirit of Mardi Gras, peaking with the Carnival parade of February 25.
Total cost GRD46,188,603.
2. Youth Celebrations
The youth celebrations, held from May 12-16 have been finally established as an institution that supports every effort made for the promotion of ideas and for the improved cultural life of the city’s youth.
Total cost: GRD5,642,588.
3. Old Town festivities
These festivities first appeared in 1991 and were soon established as a yearly event, with strong referenced to the city’s Old Town area.
This is the country’s largest traditional settlement, and the festivities are held between the 1st and 8th of September.
Total cost 25,525,601.
4. Centre of extracurricular and creative tasks for children of the municipality of Xanthi
The idea of operating the centre of extracurricular and creative tasks for children (KEDAP) belongs to he General Secretariat for Equality and the organisation of the centre was performed by the EETA which was the acting authority for the European Union’s NOW programme.
The Municipality of Xanthi was chosen along with four other Organisations of Local Authorities from throughout Greece for the opening of the said centre and its operation was in turn assigned to the Municipal Operation of Development of Xanthi.
The programme’s aim is the extracurricular activity of children, with outdoor group play. The child’s contact with nature, communication and the child’s innate tendency for creativity and free expression.
Total cost: GRD 3,360,000
5. Participation in the «FILOXENIA» Exhibition
Moreover, in 1996, the Municipal Operation of the Development of Xanthi, along with the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, participate in the Filoxenia exhibition in Thessaloniki, for the promotion of the Prefecture, and Thrace overall.
Total cost:GRD 21,037,601.
The operational expenses for this Project amounted to GRD 9,775,946.
The total of the Operation’s revenue, from Ministerial subsidies, the Municipality of Xanthi and from advertisements, amounted to GRD 108,691.550.
Moreover, each year, the Operation contributes in a variety of ways to the social, cultural, tourist , educational and economic development of our city.
